With the winter weather keeping kids cooped up indoors more and more, we know they might be bouncing off the walls. If you want your children to have great behavior, even in winter months, the key is exercise! Here are some facts about exercise and its link to child behavior.

Kids with Active Play Opportunities Are More Positive

Think about it. Even as adults, when are we on our best behavior? When we are sedentary and sluggish, we are more likely to be in a negative mood. Children require more effort to regulate their behavior, especially when they are in a bad mood.

The good news is, you can boost your child’s mood with as little as 10 minutes of physical activity. Regular active play boosts brain-healthy growth factors and stimulates the brain to create new pathways and neurons.

Children with ADHD May Not Act Out with Proper Exercise

A seven-week study found a link between improved behavior and regular exercise. They studied elementary and teenage students with both autism and ADHD. The students rode stationary bikes for short periods of time throughout the school day. There was a whopping 50 percent decrease in disruptive behaviors and outbursts among the children participating in the study.

This study shows how important exercise is to children throughout the school day. It suggests that revoking recess as a form of punishment may also be counterintuitive to improving students’ behavior.

How to Keep Kids Active

Want Your Child to Behave? Exercise Is the Key!It seems the best approach to managing kids’ behavior is to be proactive and encourage physical activity. Here are some great ways to incorporate exercise, in a fun way, into your kids’ days.

  • Get running – Even during the dreary winter months, you can still run on an indoor track. Competitive Edge has the facilities for your little ones to get moving regardless of the weather. We even offer beginning speed classes for kids ages 4 to 6.
  • Find a sport your child loves – Encourage your child to try any sport he or she shows interest in. At Competitive Edge, we offer just about every sport under the sun to try out until your child finds the right one.
  • Make it a family affair – Kids look up to their parents. When they see you doing physical activity you enjoy, they’ll want to join in. You can participate in family-friendly classes together, have a dance party, put on a workout video or take a walk together. The important thing is to move every day.

Competitive Edge gives your child the chance to discover new sports, hone skills for sports they already love, and move and play in a safe and fun place. Classes, camps and clinics are divided by age to keep students at similar levels together. Your child doesn’t have to be a star athlete to exercise! Come play with us!
