With the winter weather keeping kids cooped up indoors more and more, we know they might be bouncing off the walls. If you want your children to have great behavior, even in winter months, the key is exercise! Here are some facts about exercise and its link to child behavior.
Kids with Active Play Opportunities Are More Positive
Think about it. Even as adults, when are we on our best behavior? When we are sedentary and sluggish, we are more likely to be in a negative mood. Children require more effort to regulate their behavior, especially when they are in a bad mood.
The good news is, you can boost your child’s mood with as little as 10 minutes of physical activity. Regular active play boosts brain-healthy growth factors and stimulates the brain to create new pathways and neurons.
Children with ADHD May Not Act Out with Proper Exercise
A seven-week study found a link between improved behavior and regular exercise. They studied elementary and teenage students with both autism and ADHD. The students rode stationary bikes for short periods of time throughout the school day. There was a whopping 50 percent decrease in disruptive behaviors and outbursts among the children participating in the study.
This study shows how important exercise is to children throughout the school day. It suggests that revoking recess as a form of punishment may also be counterintuitive to improving students’ behavior.
