Individual training is important to develop a single student athlete, but training together as a team can help fine tune everyone’s skills to give them the best season possible. Competitive Edge offers team packages so everyone can work together to develop themselves as athletes and as a team. Here are some of the benefits of training together as a team.
Run drills with multiple players – While it’s still important to run drills as an individual, running drills with multiple players simulates situations athletes are likely to encounter during game play.
Work through plays before the game – It’s one thing to draw out plays in the locker room, and it’s another to run them through over and over again until they’re perfect. Practicing as a team allows you to run the plays until players know them like the back of their hands.
Scrimmage – Nothing prepares players better for the real game than actually simulating the game. Scrimmaging as a team can help players connect skills to real game situations. It also gives coaches the opportunity to dissect game play as it’s happening and course-correct to improve when it comes to actual game time.
Learn from each other – Coaches are there to guide student athletes, but players can also learn an immense amount from teammates. What better way to learn from teammates than to have them practicing side by side? Working together as a team helps develop interpersonal skills that can translate into all areas of the students’ lives. Relying on team members means learning how to ask for help to improve.
Develop team bonds off the field – Bonds made as teammates can transcend the sport itself and last a lifetime off the field. The more time student athletes spend with teammates, the more natural bonds will build between them. Working together as a team helps athletes form bonds of trust that make for great friendships.
Build a positive team culture – Team culture can develop organically by the way students interact with one another, or it can also develop with the guidance of a coach. Often, it is some combination of those two factors. Practicing together as a team can give everyone a chance off the field to work out what the team’s core values, attitudes and beliefs are to develop a cohesive team culture.
Encourage hard work during practices – A little friendly competition during scrimmages can push athletes to work even harder as they develop much-needed skills.
