Basketball is one of the many sports Competitive Edge provides skill-specific training for. We cater our clinics and programs to students new to basketball, all the way up to competitive AAU, high school and college teams. Our year-round training is designed to develop the whole athlete, as well as individual areas of opportunity. Here are just a few reasons why we encourage student athletes to participate in basketball as one of their extracurricular activities.

Hand-Eye Coordination

While many sports require hand-eye coordination, basketball requires you to multitask. You must navigate the court on foot, while dribbling the ball, and learn to catch and pass while in motion. On top of that, you must develop the skills to shoot the ball.

Endurance

Many sports allow you to be stationary for large portions of the game, but not basketball. All members of the team are required to run and maneuver up and down the court. This requires a level of endurance similar to that of a track athlete, which is why many team practices include a significant amount of endurance building drills.

Speed, Agility and Strategizing

Basketball certainly isn’t a contact sport, but it’s a sport where you don’t want to let your opponents get close enough that they can steal or intercept the ball. This requires players to memorize screens and plays, but also have the ability to create team-centered strategies on the fly when their plan is foiled. This requires the speed and agility to maneuver the court and change direction on a dime.

Teamwork, Teamwork, Teamwork

In basketball, even forwards must pass the ball to avoid interception. Star shooters must be humble enough to let the ball go and trusting enough to let their teammates get them out of the weeds. Sometimes, this requires passing the ball in the direction opposite your hoop, and, other times, it means getting the ball closer.

Calculated Risk Taking

Theoretically, you can attempt to shoot a hoop from as far down the court as you like. The farther you are away, the less likely your odds, but the higher the point value. But sometimes your best bet is to go for it — like when you are two points down, there are three seconds on the clock and you are primed for a 3-pointer. It’s a risk, but a calculated one. Having the skills to discern when to take the risk is a valuable life skill.

Great for Casual Play

You can easily set up a basketball hoop in your backyard or driveway, or head to a local park, school or playground, and play for fun. Unlike many sports, you can play basketball anytime, solo or with just one other player. Play solo to improve your skills, workout or simply for the love of the game. If you prefer to play with others, invite a basketball-loving neighbor to join you or find a local pickup game.
